Free 8th Grade Math Test Prep: Printable Practice Tests With Answer Keys

The end-of-year state math test is the biggest test of middle school for most 8th graders. The best preparation is steady and short: one topic at a time, on questions that look like the ones on the real test. That is why we made eight free printable 8th grade math tests: one for each big topic of the year and a full practice test.
What is on the 8th grade math test
Every state writes its own test, but most follow the same grade 8 standards. Students are expected to work with exponents, square roots and scientific notation, solve linear equations and simple systems, understand functions and slope, use the Pythagorean theorem, find the volume of cylinders, cones and spheres, and read data in scatter plots. Most tests mix multiple-choice questions with open-response problems, where the work counts as well as the answer.
What is in our tests
Each test has the same kinds of questions as a state test:
- multiple choice: one right answer out of four,
- true or false: decide whether each sentence is true, circling T or F,
- open response: a word problem with squared paper to show the work and a line for the answer.
We wrote all the questions ourselves. Each test has more questions than fit on the page, so every print draws other questions, in another order and with the answers shuffled. Your child can take the same topic several times, and the answer key always matches the printed version.
The topics
- Percents: discounts and markups, tax and tips, percent change.
- Exponents and scientific notation: laws of exponents, negative exponents, square and cube roots, irrational numbers.
- Linear equations: simplifying, equations with one, no or infinitely many solutions, simple systems.
- Functions and slope: slope from points and tables, y = mx + b, intercepts, linear models.
- Pythagorean theorem and angles: missing sides, distance between points, parallel lines and transversals.
- Volume: prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres.
- Statistics and probability: mean, median and range, simple and compound events, scatter plots.
The practice test
Once the topics are done, try a whole test. The 8th grade math practice test draws ten multiple-choice questions and six true-or-false statements from all seven topics, and ends with three open-response problems. Every print is a different test.
How to study
- One test a day is enough. Two topics a week, and in a few months your child will have gone through the whole year more than once.
- Work the open-response problems all the way through, with every step written down. On the real test, the work earns points too.
- Check the answers in the answer key right after the test and go back to the mistakes. The next print of the same topic asks new questions.
- Once a month, take the practice test with a timer, as on test day.
