Christmas Reading: A Gift for Grandma

Read the story. Then answer the questions.

Two weeks before Christmas, Lily opened her money box. Inside there were only three coins. "That's not enough for a present for Grandma," she sighed.

Her brother Sam looked up from his book. "Grandma always says she likes your drawings best," he said.

That gave Lily an idea. Every evening after school, she sat at the kitchen table with her pencils. For January she drew Grandma sledging down a hill. For April she drew the cherry tree in Grandma's garden. For August she drew the two of them eating ice cream by the sea. Sam helped her write the days of each month under the pictures, and Mum helped her tie the pages together with a red ribbon.

On Christmas Day, Grandma unwrapped the calendar slowly. She turned every page and laughed at the picture of herself on the sledge. Then she wiped her eyes.

"This is the best present I have ever had," she said. "Now I can see you every single day of the year."
